Vol#22 Life Lessons Through Bonsai

Someone working a small bonsai

Today, I'll discuss the life changes that occurred after I started learning bonsai.

I didn't give it much thought, but as I got into bonsai, I naturally embraced a minimalist lifestyle. Minimalism isn't just about having less, but primarily about selecting only what's truly necessary (money, work, information, time, etc.) and discarding the rest.

I think this mindset resonates with specific elements of bonsai, such as the 'aesthetics of subtraction' and the notion of 'knowing contentment'. Bonsai also eliminates anything unnecessary, keeping only what is truly essential and beautiful in the pot.

By excessively decorating an ornate pot with all the elements, you miss out on the tree's real beauty. In a world of easy access, our excessive desires hinder us from recognizing what truly matters. It feels like there's some kind of connection happening here.

Among many things and possessions, 'time' is what I value the most. When I grow bonsai, I water them each morning to experience the natural shifts in seasons through sunrises, air variations, and cloud heights. I find this moment both comfortable and enjoyable.

Don't you think it's a good idea to take a moment and slow down to experience time differently?

Until next time!
