Vol#26 Respecting the Tree’s Individuality

No two bonsai trees are ever the same. Each has its own personality, shaped by various elements such as the patterns of its trunk, the way its branches spread, the formation of its roots, and the nature of its leaves. It is a unique combination of these factors that gives each tree its character.

However, with recent advancements in bonsai techniques and the widespread of information shared on social media, I’ve noticed an increasing trend towards creating similar, so-called "perfect" or "beautiful" trees. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with thriving for beauty, I’ve come to realize the importance of embracing a tree's flaws and imperfections as part of its individuality. Instead of trying to erase these features, we should aim to enhance and highlight them in our styling efforts. These features are part of the tree story and individuality.

I know it’s tempting to shape your tree into a flawless, picture-perfect form. But I encourage you to take a moment to really see your bonsai, to understand its unique qualities, and to find beauty in its distinct features. Embrace its strengths and its flaws alike, and work toward creating a bonsai that tells its own story, with its own character and charm.
